In July 2007, we broke ground on the Centennial Hills Library in the Valley’s northwest. Construction continues on this highly-anticipated library, and when it opens in early 2009, it will be the first District branch to open since the Sahara West Library opened in 1997.

In September, we opened the District’s first Homework Help Center at the West Las Vegas Library. The 1,540-square-foot resource includes study rooms and a 20-seat dedicated computer lab with access to the Internet and the Library District’s web site including on-line homework help resources. It also offers School District textbooks and other curriculum support materials including print, electronic and audiovisual items. The Homework Help Center is a product of the 2005-2008 Strategic Service Plan’s Formal Learning Support initiative, and demonstrates the District’s commitment to its partnership with the School District to support the success of our community’s students.

The District’s on-line library catalog provides access to a collection of more than 2 million items, as well as to a wide selection of downloadable eMedia include books, music, and even movies and television programs. Materials are also available in foreign languages including Spanish, Chinese, Arabic and many others.

The system makes it easy for individuals to manage their use of our electronic resources, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. With a personal identification number (PIN) and library card number, registered patrons have access to personal account information. Powerful tools allow patrons to renew items, request new books, movies and CDs to be sent to the nearest library for pickup, and manage all items that are already checked out, and determine when they are to be returned. Patrons can even pay fines and fees on-line with a credit or debit card, or at the many self-check kiosks available to speed the check-out process.

Our Young People’s Libraries offer storytimes and programs for kids and teens, with knowledgeable library staff to assist families in the selection of age appropriate materials. Our on-line Homework Help provides multiple resources in one convenient place, including subscriptions to many digital magazines and other resources that can be used to complete homework assignments. A separate kid-friendly catalog and access to tutors on-line and reference resources round out a wide array of terrific aids for students.

In addition to providing materials for learning and personal enrichment for residents of all ages, District libraries are places where neighborhood and community residents can come together to enjoy a wide variety of programs and special events including author visits, film festivals, music, dance and drama. Six of our 12 urban libraries have performing arts centers suitable for activities ranging from club meetings to dance recitals to full-scale musical theatre. Thirteen visual art galleries support 80 exhibits annually, expressing the diversity of local, regional and national artists.

Whether you are a native of Southern Nevada, a new resident or one of our area’s millions of annual visitors, I invite you and your family to visit our libraries. We look forward to seeing you soon.
