Dances of India: From Tradition to Pop Culture
Come explore the culture of classical and modern dances of India. Purbasha Banerjee of Nritya Academy of Indian Dances will enlighten the audience about the culture behind these dances. Following her lecture, there will be a live performance of ‘Bharata Natyam’, which comes from the words ‘Bhava’ (expression), ‘Raga’ (music), ‘Tala’ (rhythm), and ‘Natya’ (classic Indian musical theatre). Today, Bharata Natyam is one of the most popular and widely performed dance styles and is practiced by many dancers all over the world. Ending the event, dancers will perform Bollywood dances, which is the dance form used in the Indian films. It is a mixture of numerous styles including: belly-dancing, kathak, Indian folk, western popular, modern, and jazz. Although these influences continue today, they seem to have become mixed with many more dance styles and have at time become unrecognizable as to their origins.
Co-sponsored by Nritya Academy of Indian Dances.
