WHAT IS THE NEVADA YOUNG READERS' AWARD?
- The Nevada Young Readers' Award was first established in the fall of 1987 by the Nevada Department of Education with the generous support of librarians and teachers. In its first year there were only 4,106 student votes in 14 schools. Since then, the award has grown each year.
- Nevada Young Reader's Award is sponsored by the Nevada Library Association and the Nevada Department of Education.
- The purpose of the Nevada Young Readers' Award is to encourage Nevada students to improve their reading skills by reading from the best of modern children's literature.
- The Nevada Young Readers' Award acts as a vehicle by which to honor outstanding works in children's literature.
- The award is presented in four categories: Picture Books, Young Reader, Intermediate and Young Adult.
- The winning book in each category is one nominated by Nevada's young readers, read by Nevada's young readers and voted on by Nevada's young readers.
- The Nevada Young Readers' Award for the previous school year is presented at the Nevada Library Association Conference which meets in the fall each year.
