FLORENCE
McCLURE
Florence McClure moved to Las Vegas with her husband in 1966.
She joined the League of Women Voters and other women's groups
in 1967. In 1969, Florence returned to college to obtain her
Bachelor's Degree and became part of the UNLV class of 1971.
Prior
to graduation, Jean Ford approached Florence about becoming
the League of Women Voters State President. Florence was confrontational
where Ford was quiet, and Florence learned from her "to do
your homework" and "always" have back up documentation. Florence
started Community Action Against Rape (CAAR) in her living
room in 1973. In the late 1980s she turned her sights on women's
prisons in southern Nevada and continues to advocate for the
improvements of the prisons and programs for incarcerated
women.
