CLARK COUNTY LIBRARY

Jean became aware of a disparity in library services shortly after moving to Las Vegas. There were no library services for residents of the unincorporated areas of Clark County where the Fords lived. Jean worked with others in the community through her contacts in the Unitarian Fellowship and the Sierra Club to resolve the problem. It was determined that a library district could be formed if property owners holding 51% of the property value in the area signed a petition. After many people spent many months circulating petitions and researching property values, it became evident that it would take years to meet their goal.

The group was advised that a possible solution was to have the state law changed to require a smaller percentage of property value. They were able to have a bill drafted to effect this change. The bill was passed and then the group was able to obtain the necessary number of signatures to create the Clark County Library.
